Vector Illustrations for Print: T-Shirts, Stickers, and Posters That Actually Print

The gap between a design that looks good on screen and a file a print shop can use is wider than most people expect. Spot colors, minimum detail, cut contours, and the file formats each process really wants.

Print is unforgiving in a way screens are not. A web illustration that is slightly too detailed just looks busy; a shirt design that is slightly too detailed comes back with the fine lines merged into a blob, and you paid for a hundred of them. The good news is that almost every print failure is decided at file-prep time, and almost every one is preventable.

This guide covers the three processes most people actually hit — screen printing and DTG for apparel, cutting for stickers and vinyl, and large-format for posters — and what each one needs from your file.

Why vector is not optional here

On the web, raster versus vector is a tradeoff. In print it is often a hard requirement. Screen printing separates artwork into one screen per color, which means the software needs discrete color regions with clean boundaries. Vinyl cutters follow a path — literally driving a blade along it — so there must be a path to follow. Neither process wants a JPEG with anti-aliased edges and 40,000 subtly different pixel values along every boundary.

Resolution is the second reason. A 4096-pixel-wide raster image is about 13.6 inches at 300 DPI — enough for a shirt front, not enough for an A1 poster. Vector artwork has no such ceiling: the same file prints on a business card and a billboard.

Apparel: screen printing and DTG

Design to the print area, not to a screen ratio

A standard adult front print is roughly 12 by 14 inches. That is the canvas — not 1080 by 1080, not 16:9. Design in that proportion from the start, because a composition that was balanced as a square gets awkward when it is stretched to fit a rectangle that a human torso has to wear.

Count your colors before you fall in love

Screen printing charges per color, per screen, per setup. A four-color design is dramatically cheaper per unit than a nine-color one, and at small runs the setup cost dominates everything. This is why so much great apparel art is two or three flat colors: it is a constraint that produced a style.

Pro Tip

Ask for the limited palette when you create the artwork rather than reducing afterward. "Three flat spot colors, no gradients" as part of the brief produces a cleaner result than trying to posterize a full-color illustration down later.

Respect the minimum detail

Ink spreads on fabric. Lines thinner than about one point at final size fill in; gaps thinner than that close up. The test is simple and worth doing every time: print the design on paper at actual size, hold it at arm's length, and look for anything that turned into mush. What paper reveals, fabric will exaggerate.

What to actually send

  • Screen printing: vector (SVG, EPS, PDF, or AI), paths not live text, flat spot colors, no unnecessary overlaps
  • DTG: 300 DPI PNG at final print size, transparent background, sRGB
  • Vinyl / heat transfer: vector with a single closed path per cut element
  • Always include: the intended print width in inches, so the shop is not guessing

Stickers and cut files

Sticker work is where path hygiene stops being aesthetic and becomes mechanical. The cut line is a path, and a machine follows it. Traced artwork with thousands of redundant nodes makes the cutter chatter, produces ragged edges, and takes longer per unit.

  • Simplify paths aggressively before export — fewer nodes, smoother cuts
  • Build the cut contour as a single closed path, offset 2–3mm outward from the artwork silhouette
  • Extend fills past the cut line (bleed) so registration drift does not expose white paper edge
  • Check the smallest island at actual sticker size — anything under about 2mm will not survive weeding
  • Favor chunky, continuous silhouettes: wispy shapes tear

Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and Glowforge all import standard SVG, so a clean vector export goes straight to the machine. The step people skip is the simplify pass, and it is the one that separates a clean cut from a fuzzy one.

Posters and large format

Large format is where vector's resolution independence stops being a talking point and becomes the whole argument. But scale changes composition: a design that felt balanced on a laptop often reads as cluttered at A1, because the viewer takes in the entire poster at once from three metres away rather than scanning a screen at arm's length.

  • Thumbnail-test: if the composition does not read at 5% zoom, it will not read across a room
  • Push contrast harder than feels necessary on screen — ambient light flattens prints
  • Add 3mm bleed on every edge and keep critical content well inside the trim
  • Ask whether the shop wants RGB or CMYK; flat vector fills convert predictably, heavy gradients less so

A pre-flight checklist

  • Artwork is vector, with paths — no live text, no embedded raster where vector was expected
  • Color count matches the process and the budget
  • Nothing thinner than the process minimum at final size
  • Cut contour, if needed, is one closed path with bleed behind it
  • Bleed added; critical content inside the safe area
  • Exported at final print dimensions, with those dimensions stated to the shop
  • Printed once on paper at actual size and looked at from a normal distance

That last item catches more problems than the other six combined, and it costs one sheet of paper.
